48 on Highway 55

FYI - Pictures tomorrow - bad internet again tonight....

This morning we left  Jackson, Mississippi and headed for Birmingham, Alabama.  Since we had a lot of highway driving today, we listened to Les Miserables as we drove - neither of us had heard it for while so that was fun.  We crossed the border into Alabama and realized I did it - all 48 of the "lower" 48!  Hurray!

We arrived in Birmingham in time for lunch, and then headed for the Civil Rights Institute.  It sits across the street from the church where four young girls were killed in a bombing there in 1963.  There is now a park also across the street with a number of sculptures representative of the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham.  The Institute and the park are both very powerful and well done.

This is dedicated to the four girls.  Note the shoes on the ground - that really affected me, as if they were just coming back for them.

These represent the dogs that were used by the Birmingham police to terrify the non-violent protestors.  There was also a sculpture of the water cannons that were turned on the high school students as they marched in the city.

Then back in the car to head to Nashville for the night!   We knew we wouldn't have much time for sightseeing in Nashville, but it has been fun to be here.  The area we are staying in feels like Las Vegas - tons of hotels, lights, restaurants, etc. And then there's the restaurant we chose to walk to for dinner - Caney Fork River Valley Grille.  Totally touristy and totally fun!  We of course had to order the wild game platter to share, complete with fried alligator tails, frogs legs, wild boar sausage, and elk patties, with a side of fried okra and fired green tomatoes as an appetizer, after the basket of corn fritters that appeared on the table.  Had a little backwoods tea to wash it down with too.....  All of this and I forgot to mention the grits I had at breakfast at the hotel and the curried goat we shared at lunchtime in Birmingham.  I think tomorrow we'll be eating vegan.....

This is the catfish pool inside the restaurant next to our table:
